Discusses the high power consumption of trams with rheostatic starting and braking and shows how the problem can be solved using thyristor control. Suggests that further power consumption savings can be achieved using regenerative braking. Presents practical energetic calculations of three types of trams: a tram with standard rheostatic control; a tram with a thyristor pulse control starting and slow running and with an electrodynamic rheostatic braking; and a tram with regenerative braking.
