A high-aperture-ratio gamma-ray telescope is described which has optical spark chambers and which is designed for operation on-board artificial earth satellites and high-altitude balloons. The instrument consists of multigap spark chambers and a counter telescope. Gamma quanta having an energy greater than 40 MeV are recorded. The geometric factor of the instrument for an isotropic flux is 115 cm2.sr; the geometric recording area is 250 cm2. During the flight of a gamma telescope on a high-altitude balloon approximately 12000 events were recorded.
