The sas-b satellite will carry a gamma ray telescope containing a thirtytwo level magnetic core digitized spark chamber system. Thin tungsten plates are interleaved between the spark chamber modules to provide material for the gamma ray to be converted into an electron pair and secondly to provide a means of determining the energy of the electrons in the pair by measuring the coulomb scattering. the spark chamber assembly is normally triggered if a charged particle passes through one of four telescopes consisting of a plastic scintillator tile in the center of the spark chamber stack and a directional lucite cherenkov counter below the spark chambers and, at the same time, there is no pulse in a surrounding plastic scintillator anticoincidence dome.
