The problem of caster wheel shimmy in wheelchairs has been solved through the use of dual wheels on a common axle or separated dual treads on a common wheel. Caster wheel shimmy is a self excited lateral oscillation if the caster which will occur when the wheelchair reaches a critical speed. The drag due to caster shimmy can be so great that the user can be thrown from the wheelchair. The new caster design allows the wheelchair to operate shimmy free at much higher speeds than with standard designs and does not require expensive and cumbersome damping devices.
