This paper describes the development of a collaborative project between the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) and the University of York. The work comprises a comparative study of the robustness of analytical redundancy methods for aircraft sensor fault detection. A new robust fault detection scheme has been developed as an outcome of the contract and this is outlined. The new approach has become the subject of a preparative study for piloted flight simulation at RAE Bedford in a feasibility for flight trials and as part of a demonstrator programme using an experimental VSTOL aircraft.
