The advances in technology of the modern era have changed the nature of battle such that eyes and ears alone are not enough for the commander to be able to assess his situation. Mechanised transport and long range weapons have expanded the battlefield beyond the line of sight and the protagonists have changed from local tribal groupings to multi-national alliances. Technical ingenuity has risen to the challenge and provides all sorts of ways in which data can be gathered, from sensors to satellites and from spies to spotter planes. Similarly faster and more reliable methods of communicating this data to the relevant commanders have been invented and devices for the storage and management of the data have developed. Now, the commanders face a new problem - too much data.
