The Automotive Industry is moving into the use of microcontrollers faster than almost any other branch of engineering. Microcomputer controlled engine management and braking systems are already in volume production while suspension and steering follow close behind. Vast sums of money are now being spent on research and development in these areas. A large proportion of the budget for development of such systems is spent on the generation and debugging of the code that runs on the microprocessor. Design methodologies and tools that reduce this investment can result in products that cost less to develop, reach the market place sooner and are more reliable. This paper examines methods of program generation and debugging that have been developed to give these advantages. We have seen that a high performance microcontroller is not a complete solution to the Automotive Industries requirements for advanced electronic solutions to its developments. If projects are to be developed quickly and efficiently the correct tools must be made avaliable.
