A thyristor converter that changes 3 kV direct current into low-voltage direct current is described; it is intended for supplementary excitation of the mainpole windings of traction motors with series excitation on board dc locomotives in regenerative-braking mode. Load characteristics are obtained for the thyristor converters, together with the locomotive current and braking characteristics following installation of the thyristor converters.
