A forty ampere-hour (Ah) nickel hydrogen (NiH2) battery has been designed and tested for use in the Modular Power Subsystem (MPS). The MPS is a spacecraft module that conditions and stores electrical energy for use on a satellite. Two NiH2 batteries would replace the three nickel cadmium batteries now used in the MPS. The NiH2 battery consists of 21 Hughes/Air Force type cells mounted in a cast aluminium structural frame. The cells are held in the casting by retaining clamps and RTV potting material. The base of the casting is mounted directly on the inner surface of the MPS radiator. This battery has been built and is currently under test at the McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company, St. Louis Division (MDAC-STL). The battery test program includes acceptance, vibration, performance, thermal, electrical, and long-term cycling tests.
