Nickel-hydrogen cell and battery technology has matured so that a viable choice now exists for current and future aerospace energy-storage applications. The nickel-hydrogen system offers a true, hermetically sealed design capable of thousands of maintenance-free cycles without need for complex charge control circuitry or close environmental control. The incorporation of nickel-hydrogen technology in low Earth-orbit (LEO) spacecraft requires the establishment of a database. An extensive test program has been established to provide this. The author outlines the test program and presents preliminary test results.
