This paper describes the development of a high-power GTO inverter to meet a specification so severe that a conventional thyristor version was impracticable. The performance requirements of the locomotive drive are discussed, and it is shown that the problem of losses favours the use of GTOs. A method of recovering energy from the snubber circuits is described and the attendant advantages of the system are outlined. The inverter is still under test, but the paper closes by summarizing expected benefits of the overall design and gives some initial test results.
