This paper determines a self-contained integrated navigation system for advanced attack helicopters. Of particular interest is the quality of the inertial navigation system needed in order to meet requirements imposed by functions such as fire control and target handoff. The requirements include a 30 meter position accuracy, 0,5 meter/sec. velocity, 0,1 degree level attitude and 0.5 degree heading accuracy. The above requirements except for the 30 meter position requirement can be achieved with a 0.1 degree per hour quality gyro inertial navigation system (INS) aided with a doppler velocimeter. The 30 meter position requirement is satisfied when GPS is available. The recommended integrated navigation system for the advanced rotorcraft includes GPS, doppler, and INS. This system will also utilize the additional update capabilities provided by target aquisition sensors (waypoint updating), PLRS (communication equipment), and terrain correlation with a digital map.
