The Department of Defense (DOD) has three ground laser designator systems - Ground Laser Locator Designator (GLD), Light Weight Designator (LTD), and Modular Universal Laser Equipment (MULE) - available to support weapon systems such as HELLFIRE, COPPERHEAD, Laser Guided Bomb. etc. Initially, it was not anticipated that critical parameters would need to be monitored at Direct Support (DS) level. A low cost, go/no-go tester at DS Level (capable of measuring critical parameters) is needed to verify that precision laser designators will properly support the weapon systems. This paper presents the design, construction, and performance of such a tester. In addition, this paper will illustrate how DOD can develop a Technical Data Package (TDP), in house, for eventual large quantity production.
