Parker Kinetic Designs, Inc. has constructed and tested a Compact Pulsed Homopolar Generator Power Supply designed to drive electromagnetic launch (EML) systems. The power supply couples a 6.7 MJ Compact Homopolar Generator to a coaxial aluminum inductor to provide the pulse conditioning required for EML applications. A portable ancillary power supply was constructed to house the generator controller as well as its hydraulic, pneumatic, and electric auxiliaries; also included in this EML power supply is a crowbar system for generator protection. This particular power supply is configured to operate with the inductor at room temperature, although the inductor is designed so that it may be cryogenically cooled with liquid nitrogen to maximize energy storage. At room temperature, 1.25 MJ is stored in the inductor at 610 kA peak current. This work was performed under contract with General Dynamics Corporation's Pomona Division.
