The GLC area encompasses about 25000 sets of traffic signals including predestrian controllers. More than half of them are connected to and controlled by computers at the GLC UTC centres in New Scotland Yard and County Hall. Controllers so connected are continuously and automatically monitored to ensure that they are complying with computer demands. Thus the majority of serious faults in such equipment can be detected and corrected very quickly. The remaining thousand sets have no such monitoring and consequently faults can and do persist for a corrected. These faults constitute a significant disbenefit to the community and to minimise this the GLC have set up the Remote Monitoring Project. The GLC Remote Monitoring System has been described in principle by Chandler who also gives the justification for the development. This paper explores the functionality of that system to a slightly greater depth to help other interested parties in the traffic field determine their own requirements. Accordingly it is not aimed at the computer specialist but for their benefit the physical architecture of the central system is described.
