A research project addressing the efficacy of expert systems techniques for improving effectiveness of missile employments from Navy surface ships is discussed in terms of general weapon systems operations, special requirements of real-time tactical situations, and a functioning experimental expert engagement support system developed at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. An overview of the Weapon Direction System and associated missile employment operation is provided as a basis for a discussion of timing and coordination requirements related to the use of expert systems techniques to improve missile employment effectiveness. A tactical scenario is presented that highlights the need for maintaining human control throughout the engagement process in spite of the need for expert decisions and machine interactions at several operating levels, all occurring within seconds. The development and test of an experimental expert system using such scenarios is reviewed in terms of lessons learned about language structures, incorporation of expert procedural knowledge, and system modelling. Preliminary results of testing the experimental expert engagement support system in simulated missile engagements at the engagement system Land Based Test Site at the JHU/APL are reported and future plans are summarized.
