Research was conducted to demonstrate the applicability of artificial intelligence techniques to the problem of estimating blood resupply requirements in Navy medical units supporting Marine Corps commands engaged in combat operations. Prototyping methodology was used to develop a combination expert system and decision support system, termed an expert support system, which was named HEMOS (Hemologic Expert Support System for Marine Corps Operational Support). The prototype system was tested and compared with state of the art manual techniques, and was found to be notably more accurate in forecasting blood resupply requirements.
