The technical challenges of the Space Station mission are the greatest ever encountered by space power systems designers. Load power required by the initial station (75 kW) will exceed that of Skylab (8 kW) by an order of magnitude. This paper presents the system trade status at the time of the final draft submittal. The two primary candidate power systems for the initial station are photovoltaic and solar dynamic. Descriptions of both candidate systems include major options for power generation, energy storage, and power management and distribution subsystems.
