The following are the main contributions of this paper: 1. The end effect problem in LIMs is studied via a generalized 3-dimensional analysis which takes into account almost all the boundary conditions of the physical problem. 2. The end effect of the LIM increases asymptotically towards a certain fixed value as the number of poles is increased. This value depends mainly on the Goodness factor of the LIM, and can be considered constant after a certain number of poles. The less the Goddness factor of the LIM, the more rapidly the end effect approaches its limiting value, and hence the improvement in the performance of the LIM as the number of poles is increased. 3. The improvement in the Force/Pole developed by the LIM as the number of poles is increased, is not due to the decrease of the end effect, but actually due to the increase of the number of poles more rapidly than that of the end effect, as The Force/Pole = The Normal Force - The End Effect/2P. 4. LIMs with double layer winding (half-filled primary end slots LIMs), have better performance than those with single layer winding (completely-filled primary slots LIMs), specially when the number of poles of the LIM is small. 5. Both the performances of the LIMs with double-layer and single-layer windings approach each other as the number of poles of the LIM is increased.
