Experiments have been carried out at Manchester Univ and at Gorton Locomotive Works in cooperation with Brit Ry Board, to assess possibilities of linear induction motor as railway traction unit; information is given on general principles of linear machines, characteristics of linear motors, speed and speed control, and initial experiments; for higher speeds problems are nearly all mechanical, rather than electrical, as there is no doubt that linear motor performance continues to improve as operating speed is raised.
