An extremely effective way of reducing the avionics cost of precision guided weapons is to integrate the design of the various subsystems of navigation, guidance and control with a common set of strapdown component and a Kalman mixer/filter. In addition to reducing the cost and improving reliability of the overall system, it is also shown that optimum mixing of the strapdown data can, in many cases, result in performance which is superior to that obtained with more expensive avionic components used in the conventional independent navigation, guidance and control configuration.
