The variability of the wind- and traffic-generated ambient noise related to source field and transmission path is discussed with emphasis on shallow water where the small noise intercept ranges allow controlled experiments. Whereas the deep water noise is governed by the propagation path, particularly at the lower frequencies, the shallow water noise is mainly dependent on the source side of the local surface agitation and the traffic scenario.
