SEA (Systems Engineering & Assessment Ltd) has conducted a research for the UK (United Kingdom)Ministry of Defence on the use of ambient wind/wave noise to measure the seabed acoustic reflection coefficient. Underwater ambient noise is continuously generated by wind and waves at the sea surface. As the noise propagates through a shallow-water environment, it interacts with the seabed. SEA has used a dedicated VLA (Vertical Line Array) for data collection trials at several locations around the UK coast with differing seabed types. The method comprises a suspended VLA using a reinforced cable below a freely drifting surface buoy. The first trial of the method took place off the west coast of Scotland, at a location around 20 miles west of Barra Head. The second measured reflection coefficient shown is from the north east coast of the port of Blyth. For this trial, the wind speed was 10 knots, and two ships were sighted during the deployment at ranges of three and seven miles. The third reflection coefficient was measured at the east of the island of Raasay in Scotland. The trials show the expected variations in observed seabed reflection coefficient for different seabed types.
