The design of a satellite borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is constrained both by performance requirements and the available technology. This paper addresses the design processes whereby the engineering requirements of the ERS-1 SAR are derived and the technological limitations to future SAR missions addressed. The paper considers the requirements of spatial resolution, radiometric resolution, ambiguous response, power requirements, localisation, and data rates in reviewing the design process.
