This paper has tried to describe the amount of planning and programming needed to create a software package which can be turned on and operated by someone who has limited, or no experience with precise navigation systems. The system NAVAID has been successfully implemented and does provide a significant aid to navigation in confined channels. During the evolution of the system it was found that many aspects which a trained operator automatically considers and controls, were not obvious to a user with understanding of general navigation but not of precise navigation. This new level of automation in the operation of the system required considerably more preparation and complexity in the software to adapt to the new environment. Fortunately the hardware is available to permit a system which need only be turned on to provide precise navigation data and display. Through considerable preanalysis and planning a final product has been delivered, which provides a major assistance in navigating confined channels.
