Energy Research Corporation has developed a nickel-cadmium battery system that is being evaluated for electric vehicle propulsion applications. The battery system design features include; 1) air circulation through gaps between cells for thermal management, 2) a metal-gas coulometric fuel gauge for state-of-charge and charge control, and 3) a modified constant current AC/DC power supply for the charger. The battery delivers one and a half to two times the energy density of comparable lead-acid batteries depending on operating conditions.
