The electric vehicle is without doubt the major market of the century for nickel-cadmium batteries. Their characteristics make nickel-cadmium batteries the ideal generator for the first series of electric vehicles. However, success is not automatically guaranteed. Possibilities of development are immense - as are the risks, in terms of price, cadmium supply and legislation. These areas demand special attention. In addition, every effort must be made to improve recycling of cadmium as the future of nickel-cadmium depends on it. With growth in the demand for electric vehicles and the nickel-cadmium batteries needed to power them, cadmium - criticised for so long without real reason - is now able to particulate in the new advanture of the modern world - the battle for a clean environment.
