A knowledge-based approach to managing the navigation sensors on advanced tactical aircraft is presented. The resulting system, called the 'Expert Navigator', makes critical equipment and mission decisions from an aircrew's perspective. Such a system must deal with real-world sensory data, monitor a plan based on that data, and be exceedingly reliable. As such, the 'Expert Navigator' requires an extraordinary depth of knowledge about navigation and must be capable of reacting to asynchronous events as circumstances change or components fail. The details of the 'Expert Navigator' are discussed along with a demonstration test-bed which couples the navigator to a high-fidelity simulation of the aircraft.
