There is a growing need for data communications in the agricultural and off-highway vehicle industry. An industry-wide search has revealed that there is no standard protocol currently in existence that adequately meets all identified requirements. This paper presents a data communication protocol which was developed to meet the needs of agricultural and off-highway equipment manufacturers. This protocol offers the ability to carry many different priority classes of data and at the same time guarantee fast access for the most critical data. The baud rate is relatively slow, so inexpensive bus interface devices may be used. Operation of the communications hardware is essentially transparent to the function of the system microprocessor. The result of analysis, simulation, and implementation show that the new protocol is a viable and promising means of achieving the high performance required of the future agriculture and off-highway equipment.
