The main purpose of this article is to call the attention of the parties concerned to the need for an improvement in international connections at cost stations of the maritime mobile service in the developing countries, in order to increase their efficiency and fully meet the objectives of the International Conventions of the Safety of Life at Sea and the Prevention of Marine Pollution as soon as possible. The author suggests that the status of coast stations be reconsidered and that a pilot project at more or less world level, or initially at sub-regional level, should be conducted to generate capital for financing the service through co-operation and co-ordination between the sectors concerned. Such action would, in his view, help to develop telecommunications and promote the interests of a large portion of the world's population.
