It has been shown that modern engine electronics have to meet requirements primarily in the dynamic domain of an SI-engine. This task can only be handled with microC's which are fast enough. The complex interdependence of functions influencing the combustion process and tough governmental regulations necessitate not only the development of sophisticated control algorithmus but also the introduction of adaptive systems. As one examples serves the learning closed loop - control in the MOTRONIC. The second part of the paper describes an advanced knock control system which allows a very tight closed loop control of turbo-charged engines, on the ignition advance angle as well as on the boost pressure.
