An advanced coil structure for magnetically levitated trains was selected based on various designs. A fullsized dummy coil, wound with copper wire has been manufactured without any trouble, which shows the feasibility of producing a lightweight and compact advanced superconducting coil. An improved superconducting switch for on-board coil operation has been developed which has a high switch-off electric resistance value. An advanced magnet composed of an advanced coil and an improved switch will contribute to raising the overall efficiency of the levitated train system. An advanced on-board coil was selected out of various structures. The full-sized dummy coil has been manufactured without any trouble, achieving 120 kg weight and 19 mm d value. The superconducting advanced coils would surely enhance magnetic levitating performance for a vehicle. Improved switches, which have 5.5 omega and 11.7 omega switch-off resistances, have been manufactured. They will make it possible to shorten the coil excitation time and to decrease their burnout possibility in case of the coil quench. A highly efficient superconducting magnet will be realized by the combination of the advanced coil and the improved switch. The magnet will contribute to raising the overall efficiency for the levitated train system.
