Recently a flight test program was concluded to test a director weapon control system. Within the digital computer of this weapon control system was a Kalman filter. The purpose of the Kalman filter was to measure the position, velocity and acceleration of a target aircraft. It was noticed as the attacker aircraft maneuvered that quite large errors were induced in the target state estimates. Examination of the input data to the filter showed that the inputs were unsynchronized. Analysis of this problem shows how this unsynchronized data produces the state estimation errors. The paper describes briefly the type of filter used and the analysis which led to determining the state estimation errors. It also shows how to some degree these estimation errors can be eliminated even in the presence of the data delays.
