The Civil Engineering department of British Rail currently operates a High Speed Track Recording Coach (HSTRC) (figure 1) which has been designed to meet these requirements. The vehicle is, whenever possible, attached to Inter City service trains thus avoiding the cost and inconvenience of special working. Branch and freight lines are still measured with a number of slow speed mechanical trolleys which have been in use for a number of years and which it is planned to replace with a new self-propelled recording vehicle. Also the Research and Development Division operate a Track Recording Multiple Unit (TRMU) which is used for research into track mechanics and track deterioration and as a test vehicle for the development of new measuring systems. This paper will refer to these new developments where appropriate since some items of equipment installed in the HSTRC are now obsolete.
