Water curtain type MIG welding has been developed for underwater welding and successfully applied to butt and fillet joints at a depth of 0,3 m. Butt welding simulated depth of 90 m has now been carried out using a high pressure chamber 3 m long. 1.5 m diameter. The usual problem of spatter can be avoided and welds with no blowholes or cracks produced using spray or dip transfer with argon as the shielding gas and careful selection of the welding parameters.
