COMTRAC is a system designed to computer-control train traffic on the Shinkansen railroad line from the center in Tokyo. With the increase in the number of trains to be controlled and in the scope of control, accompanying the extension of the Shinkansen line to Hakata, control functions were to be stepped up. The recently developed system consists of five subsystems, with the newly added functions of plainning of train traffic schedule and information transmission to the stations along the line. Also, route control, adjustment of train traffic schedule, and statistics processing were vastly reinforced. These functions were made possible by a complexed computer system consisting of two units of the Hitachi Computer System 8450 and three units of the Hitachi Control Computer 700, which proved a tough system with high reliability.
