An approximate method is proposed for calculation of the wave-induced design bending moment for any given ship's operational life. The basic assumption of the method is that the type of probabilistic distribution of the wave-induced bending moment within different time periods does not change. Only the values of the distribution's parameters change. An example is given for a 25,000 DWT bulk carrier. The proposed method was developed for strength assessment of old ships, for which their remaining life is smaller than the originally assumed design operational life. The method could also be used in strength assessment of new ships.
