Aiming at revealing the cause which leads to unexpected wheel and rail wear and track damage associated with the operation of modern high powered vehicles, quantitative analytical work concerning the steady state behaviour of powered bogies on curved track has been made, which shows that the key factor is the oonfliot between steering and traotion due to the limited wheel/rail adhesion. It also shows that in many cases steering ability can still he endued to a powered bogie by softening its primary yaw suspension if there is a proper match between the traction coefficient and curve radius.
