This paper describes practical strategies, based on experience and scientific analysis that can be used to control and limit wheel profile wear. An understanding of the fundamental influences on wheel profile wear is essential as uncontrolled high wear rates do not only increase wheel re-profiling costs but the resulting worn wheel profile increases rail damage, impairs the running behaviour of the vehicle and ultimately could pose a safety risk. Hence, the tread profile of a railway wheel must be managed so that it changes as little as possible during its service life.
