The lowest natural frequencies and mode shapes (X-form and H-form) as well as the pertinent damping ratios of the main drive system of two large container vessels are identified using experimental modal analysis. By comparative measurements the influence of the engine side stays on the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the engine structure is determined. The results of measurement are compared with natural vibration computations based on finite element models for engine and surrounding ship structure.
