We have already analyzed the tactical planning stages of setting the service frequencies and timetables. One important aspect in the tactical planning of dense, multi-modal public transport networks is the synchronization of different services so that the services of the lines are coordinated and the passenger transfer times are minimized. This chapter focuses on this tactical planning issue, which has extensions at the operational level. The aim is to provide model formulations for synchronizing the transfers at public transport networks with no hierarchy and in networks with hierarchy, where some lines act as feeder (first/last-mile) and some other lines as collector linesCollector lines.
