In the previous chapter we concentrated on the strategic planning phase of public transport services, including the estimation of origin-destination matrices, the selection of station/stop locations, the definition of line routes, and the graph-based evaluation of the resulting public transport networks. Once a public transport network is formed, a new series of actions need to take place to make it operational, including the determination of line frequencies, timetables, vehicle and crew schedules. This chapter focuses on the tactical planning decision level and addresses the frequency settingsFrequency setting and timetablingTimetabling problems.
