Abstract Traffic accidents are one of the principal causes of the loss of abundant human and natural resources and destruction of infrastructure in all countries, especially developing one. This research aims to measure the relationship between the range of variables related to the types of traffic accidents (crash, rollover, run over, and others), with the most common causes that lead to these accidents (road, vehicle, driver, and pedestrian) in Iraq. This relationship based on the hypothesis that the variance of these accidents is the result of the variation of their causes, this relationship was tested by using the multiple regression analysis model for tow periods of study time (1979–2000) and (2010–2017). This test demonstrated a strong correlation between traffic accidents and the causes of accidents. The rate of correlation of variables in the general estimated models between 95% and 100%, which mean there is a strong positive correlation between traffic accidents and road users, driver and pedestrian (human factors), and these overshadowed the relationship between traffic accidents and their causes, roads, and vehicles (physical factors), which is explained by the significant deterioration in the traffic regulations and laws.
