The United States launched six spacecraft to explore Venus in the time period 1960–1980. Of those, five were successful. One was lost due to a launch failure. Three spacecraft were sent on flyby missions, one spacecraft orbited Venus, and one dispatched four instrumented probes through the clouds to the surface of Venus. The orbiting spacecraft contained a synthetic aperture radar than penetrated the clouds and mapped 98% of the surface of Venus.
