The terms “demand characteristic of a vehicle” and “delivery characteristic of a prime mover” and their graphical representation are introduced. For the various prime movers that can be used in vehicle operation (steam engine; electric motor as DC, AC and three-phase motor; internal combustion engine; gas turbine), the torque or tractive force characteristic curves as well as the power characteristic curves are presented and discussed, taking into account both the characteristic curves for propulsion and for braking (via the propulsion systems). The term “characteristic converter” is also explained. For internal combustion engines, the characteristic conversion by mechanical and hydraulic transmissions and by electrical power transmission is shown. The design principles of the mechanical part of electric drives are also presented. The chapter concludes with hybrid drives for rail vehicles.
