Ice disasters pose a major threat to transmission lines and their associated power equipment [1–5]. Among them, the repair and inspection of transmission lines are the most challenging and have the most significant impact, as shown in Fig. 4.1. Generally, ice accumulation can cause three forms of damage to power lines. The first form occurs when there is a small amount of ice accumulation, and the ice layer wraps around the conductor in an irregular shape. Under the action of external forces such as wind, the conductor will undergo low-frequency and large-amplitude self-excitation vibration, which can lead to line breakage and tower collapse. The second situation is flashover; although the structural damage might not be caused, it results in the loss of insulation and renders the entire power grid unable to supply power normally. The third and most serious situation is that excessive vertical load due to ice accumulation on the line may cause structural damage to the entire power grid. Therefore, strengthening and improving the anti-icing ability of transmission lines, accelerating research on effective anti-icing and de-icing technologies for transmission lines, and minimizing and preventing the harm caused by ice disasters to transmission lines are issues that must be addressed by power companies, cable enterprises, and others in various countries.
