To identify the existing problems in the applicable organization and technology of rail grinding and the existing design of rail grinding trains (RGT) on the Russian railroad network, an on-site expert analysis in the form of mapping was carried out. Besides the purpose of mapping was the formation of measures to solve the detected problems and determination of the operational potential of the RGT fleet. Mapping was conducted on different sections of the South-Eastern and Privolzhskaya railroads. Working group of experts during the work has inspected the rail-grinding trains, studied their characteristics, design features, operation and maintenance procedure. The problems of train operation, maintenance and servicing were studied. As a result of the work performed, more than forty problems of the railroad track grinding efficiency were identified with the help of RGT-48 train. A categorization of their solution was proposed for the compiled list of problems. The company's losses from the problems identified were estimated at more than 6.5 million rubles for one rail grinding train and more than 45 million rubles for the train fleet. The identified potential possibility of rail grinding by the existing fleet in the elimination of problems has shown that it is possible to increase the volume of rail grinding to 10,000 km of a year and more with the revenue over 310 million rubles per year for one train.
