Numerous efforts have been devoted to advancing the knowledge of signal-free autonomous intersection control under connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) environment. Rhythmic control (RC) is a novel signal-free control method with two significant benefits: less computational burden and less vehicle delay. However, RC requires redesigning intersection geometric layout. This increases the intersection footprint and causes a systematic delay. Vehicle crossing paths in existing signal-free intersection control literature mainly followed conventional intersection design. To solve this problem, this paper takes advantage of unconventional intersection designs and proposes a new signal-free autonomous intersection control model named the parallel flow intersection rhythmic control model (RC_PFI). It maintains the benefit of rhythmic control and shows the potential of unconventional intersection design in managing vehicle conflicts. In numerical experiments, RC-PFI shows the strength in reducing vehicle delay compared with three other control strategies.
