An approach for determining the performance characteristics of an ultralight helicopter in the concept design phase is proposed, taking into account the characteristics of piston engines as well as the power needed to operate the onboard equipment. Exact and approximate analytical expressions for calculating the basic performance characteristics of the helicopter are given. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by an example dealing with the optimization of an ultralight helicopter in order to obtain the maximum endurance.
