For sustainable development, reuse of construction and demolition waste (C&DW) is a need of the hour. A significant portion of C&DW in India comprises soil-sized material (SSM) (−4.75 mm). To reuse SSM from C&DW in value-added applications like backfill for reinforced walls requires the removal of fines which incurs additional cost. For using as an earthfill in embankment or filling low-lying areas, removal of fines is not mandatory. Thus, the proposition of using SSM from C&DW is considered in the present study. The geotechnical properties (grain size, specific gravity, plasticity, compaction, and shear strength) of SSM collected from the input unit of a processing plant at Ghaziabad, India, were carried out. The results were compared with the locally available Delhi silt (DS). The test results concluded that the SSM was around 50% of the total incoming C&DW. About 50–60% of SSM comprises silt and a clay-sized fraction (< 0.075 mm) but is coarser than DS. Specific gravity, compaction characteristics, and permeability of SSM and reference material were similar. The angle of shearing resistance from the direct shear test on a dry sample of SSM was 41–42°, whereas for DS, it was 35–36°. Thus, from the study, it can be concluded that SSM from C&DW has the potential to be reused as an earthfill for embankments. This study is limited to geotechnical characterization only and does not consider the environmental impacts of using C&DW, which are being taken up in the second phase of the study.
